Relocate the toilet, shift the shower drain or add a sink on a new line and the plumbing is altered, which takes a Town building permit and a rough-in inspection. Which side of that line the job falls on is settled at the design stage: you approve the design and fixtures before anything is torn out, and we agree the budget together. Bathrooms near 40: what gets renewed behind the tile

Around Sharon much of the housing went up in the mid to late 1980s, with more built slowly since 2002, so many bathrooms there are near 40 years old. At that age the price of a bathroom turns less on the tile than on the subfloor, pipes and tub framing under it, and moving the toilet or shower drain costs more than leaving fixtures in place.

Once a bathroom of that age is stripped, we look at the subfloor under the toilet and tub, the supply and drain lines in the walls and the framing around the old surround. Those are the parts worth replacing while the walls are open, since they cannot be reached once new tile is on. The membrane then goes over sound backing.
