What’s included

What a home sauna
project includes.

A sauna is a small room with its own rules: heat, dry wood and moving air. It is designed around the space you have and how many people use it at once.

  1. Sauna types

The kind of heat you want decides the kind of room.

    • Traditional and Finnish saunas
    • Infrared saunas
    • Wooden banya
    • Outdoor saunas
  2. Design

A layout that fits the space available, your household and how you use it.

    • Sizing to the room or yard
    • Bench layout
    • Heater selection
    • Door and glass
  3. Build and installation

The room is framed, insulated, lined and wired as one job.

    • Framing, insulation and vapour barrier
    • Wood lining and benches
    • Heater and controls
    • Electrical connection
  4. Repair and renovation

For a sauna that is tired or has stopped working, whoever built it.

    • Bench and floor repairs
    • Heater repair and replacement
    • Relining an older sauna

We work through the design with you, with drawings to help you picture the work, before you approve it for construction.

  4. A conversation throughout

We discuss the work and your budget at the start, then keep you informed as the project moves through each stage.

Good to know

Planning a sauna:
what shapes the job.

A sauna is small, but it concentrates heat, moisture and electrical load in one place. Three things decide how it is built.

The room

Size follows the number of people and whether you want to lie down. A larger room takes a larger heater and longer to warm up, so a sauna is usually made no bigger than it needs to be.

The walls and ceiling are insulated and sealed behind the wood so the heat stays in the room and moisture stays out of the house’s framing.

Heat, wood and air

The heater is matched to the volume of the room. The benches are set at heights that let you choose how hot to sit, since the air is warmest near the ceiling.

Glass in the door or a wall makes a small sauna feel less enclosed. It also changes how much heat the room loses, which is taken into account when the heater is chosen.

Electrical

Almost all electrical work in Ontario needs a notification to the Electrical Safety Authority, and a sauna heater’s dedicated circuit is no exception. Ask who is filing it and check that the electrician is a Licensed Electrical Contractor.
