What’s included

What interlocking
work includes.

Interlocking in Aurora with Sonce begins under the stones: the old surface comes out, the ground is dug down, and the base is compacted and graded to shed water. The pavers then go down in the size, colour and pattern you pick, with border bands or inlays, before the edges are set and joint sand is swept in.

Interlocking driveways in Aurora

Aurora’s Zoning By-law sets how wide a driveway can be, and the answer comes from the lot’s frontage. Residential lots needing fewer than five parking spaces are capped at 3.5, 6.0 or 10.0 metres as the frontage passes 9 and 18 metres, and no driveway may be narrower than 2.7 metres. Estate Residential and Rural lots have no overall maximum. On every lot, the driveway can be no more than 6.0 metres wide at the street line, so a wide parking area narrows back to that where it meets the street.

Entrances are limited too. A residential lot gets one driveway access point, and a second access or a circular driveway is allowed only where the frontage is 25 metres or more. Before we draw a widening or a new layout, we measure the frontage from your survey and plan the interlock to those numbers, so the design you approve is one the Town’s rules allow.

The base under Aurora interlock: clay, drainage and finished grade

Aurora sits on the Schomberg Lake glacial plain, where the old drift was partly worn away and filled with lake-bed clay, silt, sand and reworked till. Clay and silt hold water instead of letting it drain, and water held under pavers is what lets them sink or lift. So the excavation goes to the depth your ground and load need, the base is compacted, and the grade is set to move water off and away.

The Town of Aurora says residents have already seen more seasonal flooding, more extreme rainfall and more ice storms, which puts more weight on where the water goes. The zoning by-law adds two rules of its own: a driveway or parking pad must be a properly constructed, drained hard surface, and it may not sit above the lot’s average finished grade. Both shape how the base is graded and where the edges finish.

Lifting, re-levelling and sealing interlock that is already down

Interlock that has sunk or heaved does not always need replacing. The section is lifted, the base under it rebuilt and compacted, and the same stones relaid, with cracked ones replaced and loose edges reset, so the patch matches the surface around it. Upkeep after that is cleaning, topping up joint sand where it has washed out, and sealing if you want a deeper colour. Joint sand matters more than it looks: it locks the stones together and keeps weeds and water out of the gaps.
