What’s included

What a patio project
includes.

Each patio we build in Aurora is pavers or stone with border bands, steps from the door, seat walls and lighting. A porch, cedar fence or gate can go in the same design, so the yard is dug up once.

  1. Patios

A level, paved place for a table or a seating group, sized to how you will use it.

    • Paver and stone patios
    • Excavation and a compacted base
    • Border bands
    • Steps from the door
  2. Porches

The front of the house, rebuilt to be used and not only walked across.

    • Porch construction
    • Stairs and railings
    • Cedar ceilings and posts
    • Stone cladding
  3. Fences, gates and screens

Made to match what’s next to them, they give privacy and enclosure.

    • Cedar privacy fences
    • Metal gates
    • Privacy screens
  4. Walls and lighting

Using a patio after dark comes down to the details.

    • Seat walls
    • Lights under the wall caps
    • Step lighting

A patio builder in Aurora on clay and rolling ground

Aurora's back yards decide much of a patio before the paver is chosen. Rear yards in Northeast Old Aurora are generous, but their ground still rises and falls with the original land, so a level patio there may need cut and fill, a step or a low retaining edge. On a flatter lot elsewhere in town, that earthwork shrinks and the area and stone carry more of the price.

The town's glacial plain was filled with lake-bed clay, silt and sand, and clay is slow to let water through. The Town also says residents are already seeing more extreme rainfall. Together those set the patio's drainage: the base is excavated deeper and compacted in layers, and the surface falls away from the house toward somewhere the water can go.

Patio permits and approvals in Aurora

Digging out a patio base is grading, and grading near a lake, river, stream, steep slope or wetland can lie inside land the Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority regulates, where the work may need its approval before the excavator arrives. The other approval is for clearing: more than two trees in 12 months, a heritage tree or any tree in a heritage district needs a permit under the Town's tree by-law.
