What’s included

What a deck project
includes.

As a deck builder in Newmarket we measure on site, take levels from the back door and show you a rendering before any lumber is ordered. Boards are cedar, pressure-treated or composite over a treated frame, with cedar, aluminium or glass railings and lights in the stair risers.

  1. Wood decks

The lumber is cedar or pressure-treated, and you decide on a stain colour or let it weather.

    • Cedar or pressure-treated boards
    • Single and multi-level layouts
    • Stain and sealer
    • Wide steps down to grade
  2. Composite decks

A wood frame under composite boards, so the only real upkeep is washing the surface.

    • Composite decking
    • Cedar posts and rail caps
    • Aluminium balusters
    • Raised decks with stairs
  3. Stairs, railings and lighting

The parts you touch every day, chosen with the deck and built with it.

    • Cedar, aluminium or glass railings
    • Stairs and landings
    • Lights set into the risers
    • Decks around an above-ground pool
  4. Design and rendering

A measured layout and a rendering of the deck before any lumber is ordered.

    • Site measure and levels
    • Layout and material choices
    • A rendering to review
  5. Repair and renovation

New life for a deck whose structure is still sound, and honest advice when it is not.

    • Frame and joist repairs
    • New boards on an existing frame
    • Railing replacement
    • Deck waterproofing

One contractor,
both sides of the door.

When Newmarket asks for a deck permit

The Town of Newmarket asks for a building permit when a deck crosses any one of three lines: more than 10 square metres, attached to the house, or 600 mm or more above grade. A deck fixed to the wall outside a kitchen door is attached by definition, so most back decks need a permit. It adds drawings and an inspection, and we fold both into the plan from the first measure.

What Newmarket deck builders put under the boards

Newmarket sits on Newmarket Till, glacial sand and gravel so deep that there are no rock outcrops anywhere in town, so a footing hole goes down through soil the whole way. Digging is straightforward, and the footing has to reach below where frost works, because cold, somewhat snowy winters freeze the top of that soil each year. The posts and beams are sized for the deck's height and for a winter's snow sitting on it.

Repair, new boards or a full rebuild

Footings tell a deck builder which job an old deck needs. One that never reached below the frost moves with Newmarket's winters, and the deck above it leans or pulls at the house. Those decks get new footings and usually a new frame. A deck that still sits level, with worn boards or a loose railing, keeps its structure and gets a new surface or guards.

Decks on pie-shaped and rectangular lots

On the small to moderate lots of Newmarket's newer neighbourhoods, rectangles and pie shapes behind two-storey houses, a deck shares the yard with a path, a lawn and the gate, and its stairs take part of the same space. That is why the site measure and the levels from the back door come before the rendering: the drawing has to show where the stairs land and how much lawn is left.
